“Barking Up the Right Tree: Leadership Lessons from Dog Training”
If you are a dog lover, you will love this interview!
In this interview, Robert Middleton invited me to share the parallels between corporate leadership and dog training. I explained that my program, “Dog-Gone Leadership,” leverages the ordinary experience of dog ownership to teach critical leadership skills.
I emphasize that there are many similarities between dog behavior and training and effective leadership in the workplace. And my program aims to help leaders thrive in their roles by fostering better relationships and achieving results without compromising either.
Additionally, I highlight that leadership requires adapting to various individuals’ needs, much like understanding and responding to different dogs’ behaviors. Participants can enhance their leadership abilities at work by improving their leadership skills with their dogs.
I also address the broader goal of reducing the number of dogs in shelters by encouraging program participants to adopt rescue dogs.
This approach benefits the dogs and offers valuable lessons in patience, communication, and empathy, which can be directly applied to managing teams in a business setting.
The interview illuminates the holistic benefits of this method, illustrating how nurturing leadership skills with dogs can create a more harmonious and effective work environment while also addressing broader societal issues.
As dog owners and lovers, Robert and I enjoyed our conversation. We hope you do too!
